Marjane was different than the people in Europe because she grew up in a place of war and her definition of pain was a lot worse than everyone around her. On page 194  Marjane  wanted her past to disappear, she said this because she was different from everybody else and could not relate. She was different because she grew up in a place of war and her definition of pain was a lot worse than everyone around her.   I don't believe it was that she felt the bad about it but her past was keeping her from socializing with her friends and understanding them. On page 197 however she was tired of trying to become something she wasn't and said " you were going to shut up or I'm going to make you i am an Iranian and proud of it!"   This showed that she had given up trying to understand her new friends and excepted that she was going to be different no matter what she did and accepted it.  This isn't to say she gave up socializing  because on page 209 she joined a group...
